About the Breed
Q: Are Dobermans good family dogs?
Yes - with proper genetics, and when raised and trained correctly, Dobermans are loyal, affectionate, and deeply bonded to their families. They thrive when included in daily life and given structure, mental engagement, and exercise. They are not a low-maintenance breed; they require consistent training, socialization, and meaningful outlets for their intelligence and energy.
Q: How much exercise does a Doberman need?
Dobermans are an athletic, working breed developed for stamina and responsiveness. They need both physical exercise (daily walks, runs or play,) and mental stimulation (obedience work, scent games, or agility). Under-exercised Dobermans can become anxious or destructive - balance and consistency are key.
Q: Are Dobermans friendly with other dogs?
Dobermans can be social with other dogs, but this depends on many factors and the dog as an individual. Intact males will likely show same-sex aggression (SSA) towards other intact males and should be carefully managed. For safety, we never recommend dog parks or daycares, as uncontrolled environments can lead to conflicts. Dobermans do well with other dogs in their own household but may not be outwardly social with unknown dogs.
About Apexe Dobermans
Q: What makes Apexe Dobermans different from other breeders?
At Apexe Dobermans, all puppies are born and raised in our home, fully immersed in everyday family life. From the very first days, they experience normal household sights, sounds, and routines, which helps them develop confidence, social skills, and emotional stability. Growing up in this environment lays the foundation for well-adjusted, adaptable dogs who are comfortable in a variety of settings.
Every mating is carefully planned using thorough health testing, detailed pedigree analysis, and hands-on evaluation of each dog’s qualities. We do not follow trends or take shortcuts; each decision is made with the goal of producing balanced, capable Dobermans.
The dogs we produce retain their intended working ability and athleticism, while also being capable of thriving as confident, well-adjusted companions in family life.
Q: Do you breed American or European Dobermans?
Our program is built on primarily European working lines chosen for balance, health, and correct temperament. We do not breed for extremes -our focus is a moderate, functional Doberman who can succeed in sport, performance, or as an active family companion. Each dog’s pedigree is linked on our page - we hope you take the time to research the pedigrees and health testing provided to you.
Q: What health testing do you perform?
All breeding dogs are fully health-tested according to - and often beyond - breed club standards. This includes advanced cardiac screening, DNA testing for known genetic conditions, hip evaluations, thyroid testing, eye exams, and dentition database submissions.
For every breeding dog we own, we provide a complete list of completed health tests along with a link to their OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) profile. OFA verification is critical because it confirms that test results are accurate and directly verified by a licensed veterinarian. This protects against falsified or altered results - a problem that unfortunately occurs in some breeding programs.
Puppy Process and Logistics
Q: How do I reserve a puppy from Apexe Dobermans?
We maintain a waitlist for upcoming litters. Prospective owners begin by completing a puppy application, which helps us understand their goals, experience, and lifestyle to ensure the best match for each puppy. Once a litter is confirmed by ultrasound or born, approved applicants may place a non-refundable reservation fee to secure a spot on the list. We typically do not accept reservations before a litter is confirmed.
Q: How do you match puppies with homes?
We carefully evaluate each puppy’s temperament, energy level, grips, drives, and recovery responses through structured observation and hands-on handling from birth. These early assessments allow us to understand each puppy’s natural traits and personality. Puppies are then placed in homes that best match their individual needs, energy, and temperament, taking into account each owner’s experience, lifestyle, and goals. Our priority is always the right fit for the puppy and the owner, rather than simply following a first-come, first-served approach.
Q: When can I take my puppy home?
Puppies typically go home at 8 weeks of age, once they have completed initial veterinary care, early socialization, and temperament evaluation.
Q: Do you sell on limited or full registration?
All puppies are placed on limited registration. Sport or breeding prospects are placed selectively and only with homes aligned with our values and goals for the breed. Dogs can later be converted to full registration upon completion of health testing and titling.
Q: What support do you provide to owners?
We believe responsible breeding extends beyond the sale. Apexe Dobermans provides lifetime breeder support for every dog produced - including training advice, nutrition guidance, and help with health or behavioral questions throughout the dog’s life.
Q: Do you offer cropping and docking?
Natural homes - with unaltered ears and tails - are our priority, reflecting how Dobermans are born. While the American Doberman standard calls for cropped ears and docked tails, many of our prospective buyers intend to compete in Europe, where cropping and docking is illegal. Dogs with cropped ears or docked tails are not eligible for competition at the highest levels in these regions.
We also believe that maintaining the tail as a natural extension of the spine reduces the risk of injury and arthritis over time, and all puppies retain their dewclaws, which we consider functional and useful.
That said, cropping and docking is available for certain litters. If an owner chooses this option, we can help arrange the procedure with a skilled veterinarian and provide guidance on aftercare to ensure the puppy’s safety, comfort, and proper healing. If this is important to you, please inquire further and we can explain specifics for the litter you are interested in.
Q: Do you ship puppies?
In-person pickup is required to ensure a safe, stress-free transition. Meeting in person is important to us!
Q: Do you export puppies?
In most cases, no. We require in-person pickup. This makes international travel impractical for most out-of-country buyers. The exception is Canada, where we are familiar with import requirements and buyers can arrange travel that is completed safely within a single day.
Final Thoughts
Apexe Dobermans exists to protect, preserve, and elevate the Doberman breed through intentional and ethical breeding practices. Every decision - from health testing to puppy placement - is made with the breed’s long-term welfare in mind.
If you believe the working Doberman is the right breed for you and are committed to providing an active, engaged home, we’d love to talk with you.
